The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Enhancing Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

John Jay

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing higher education by providing personalized learning experiences, automated assessment, intelligent tutoring, and academic support. This article examines the potential applications, benefits, and challenges of AI-based educational technologies in higher education. It adopts a conceptual review approach to discuss how AI tools can support students and educators in teaching, learning, and academic assessment. The discussion focuses on personalized learning pathways, automated feedback, student engagement, accessibility, data privacy, and responsible technology use. The analysis suggests that AI can support more flexible and responsive learning environments when integrated with appropriate instructional design and teacher supervision. However, concerns regarding academic integrity, algorithmic bias, data protection, and unequal access to technology require careful consideration. The article emphasizes that AI should complement rather than replace educators. It concludes that institutions should establish clear policies, provide digital literacy training, and evaluate educational technologies before large-scale implementation. Responsible integration of AI can contribute to inclusive, effective, and technology-supported higher education.
